http://www.theguardian.com/
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/02/ukraine-warns-russia-crimea-war-live

<太田>

Japan, whose diplomacy under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has focused on ameliorating ties with President Vladimir Putin’s administration, did join in a statement from the Group of Seven industrialized nations that it was suspending preparations for the scheduled G-8 Summit in Sochi in June. The G-7 statement said that this would stay in place “until the environment comes back where the G-8 is able to have meaningful discussion.”
 But a Foreign Ministry statement issued on Sunday stopped short of condemning Russia’s actions.
 The Japanese premier made a point of attending the opening ceremonies of the Sochi Winter Olympics last month while the U.S., Canada and many European leaders boycotted the ceremony for Russia’s clamping down on gay civil rights.

Ukraine's army and navy units in the Crimea remained loyal to Ukraine's new leadership and reportedly repelled several attempts by Russian troops to disarm them.

Earlier, Ukrainian naval officers found their headquarters in Sevastopol occupied by Russian troops and were unable to go to work.
 Separately, Ukraine withdrew coast guard vessels from two ports in Crimea and moved them to other bases in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov on Sunday.・・・

 Ukraine's Navy headquarters in Sevastopol has been occupied by Russian troops and surrounded by a civilian guard.
 Naval officers have been prevented from going to work and are confined to base.
 The Navy's Admiral Yuri Ilyn, who was allowed to leave, told・・・that the officers were "hostages of the situation".

 Paralympic officials said Sunday they aren't aware of any teams or athletes canceling plans to attend the Games, which begin with Friday's opening ceremony and run until March 16. Roughly 1,600 athletes and delegation members are scheduled to...

Since independence, every poll in Ukraine has shown a majority against Nato membership, yet one after another the elites who ran the country until 2010 and who are now back in charge ignored the popular will. Seduced by Nato's largesse and the feeling of being part of a hi-tech global club, they took part in joint military exercises and even sent Ukrainian troops to Iraq and Afghanistan.
 The deposed Viktor Yanukovych, for all his incompetence, corruption and abuse of power, was the first president to oppose Nato membership in his election campaign and then persuade parliament to make non-alignment the cornerstone of the country's security strategy, on the pattern of Finland, Ireland and Sweden.

It is only by moving west, toward Europe, that Russia itself can reverse its demographic and political trap. Year by year, the Russian political system becomes more of a corrupt Oriental despotism -- with Moscow closer to Almaty than Berlin. The alternative is for Ukraine to pull Russia with it toward the West.
As former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski explained in a 2008 book, “If Ukraine moves to the West, first to the EU and eventually to NATO, the probability that Russia will move toward Europe is far greater. ---- Russians will eventually say, ‘Our future will be safest, our control over the Far East territories most assured ---- if there is a kind of Atlantic community that stretches from Lisbon to Vladivostok.’”

 Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s brand of nationalism is a becoming an ever more serious threat to Japan’s relations with the United States.
 A confrontational relationship with China at this time could help him convince a deeply pacifist people of the need for heightened defense preparedness. It seems a peculiarity of Japan that those who advocate a greater military posture tend to overlap with historical revisionists. Mr. Abe’s nationalism aside, however, neither he nor other mainstream Japanese leaders are about to enhance Japan’s military capabilities without American consent because they are deeply committed to the U.S.-Japan security alliance.

 ・・・at least 29 people at a train station in south-western Kunming, in an attack the government has blamed on Xinjiang separatists.
More than 130 were injured in the brutal attack, which began just after 9pm on Saturday. Police shot dead three male and one female attackers at the scene and captured a female suspect, state news agency Xinhua reported. About five others remain on the run.・・・
