僕を含む５人の大学仲間の恒例の忘年会に、僕と後２人と面識のある米留時代の仲間１人を僕が加えたところ、丁寧語とぞんざい語が交錯する不思議なやりとりが始まり、僕が何度全部ぞんざい語にしようと言っても最後までそのままだった。
でも、結構盛り上がったな。
それにしても、日本語って面白いなあ。

無駄が多過ぎる気がしてなりません。

＜コラム#5012の＞周辺の話をつっついて恐縮ですが、村田教授は何年か前に同じたかじんの番組で在日米軍は日本にとっては人質のようなもの・・・という発言をしていましたね。
この発言をもってしても日本の国際関係を研究する学者の程度が分かると思いました。

日本のマスメディアの質の低さの原因についてどうお考えでしょうか。
「河上清は一記者に過ぎませんが、彼の論調の軌跡を見ると、・・・一貫して日本の世論の動向に配慮した記事を書き続けたことが分かります。
大新聞の論調についても、基本的に同じことが言えるのであろう、と考えます。
もっとも、大新聞が、世論の動向に配慮するのは当たり前ないしやむを得ないとしても、（例えばナチスドイツに係る、）事実や、未来予測をそのために捻じ曲げたらいけないわけですが、残念ながら、日本のマスコミには、当時も現在も、ややもすればその傾向がうかがえるようです。」（コラム#4998。太田）
↑から、戦前戦後問わず、日本特有の大衆迎合的体質があるとお考えで、
「報道の自由「後進国」の日本・再訪」（コラム#2132）
↑からは、戦後特有のジャーナリズムの歪みがあると太田さんはお考えのようです。
私は日本の社会科学等の貧弱さも原因の一つではないかと考えるようになりました。↓
「・・・文部科学省・科学技術政策研究所・・・は、米国の調査会社の論文データベースを使い、1999〜2004年に発行されたもののうち、 引用回数で上位にある約１万件の重要論文を分析した。その結果、日本の占有率は９％で、米国（61%）、ドイツ（13%）、英国（12%）に次ぎ４位だった。５位以下はフランス（７％）、中国（３％）だった。
分野別では・・・精神医学・心理学、社会科学、経済学は０％だった。」

日本の社会科学は戦前（江戸時代含む）からずっとこんな調子だったのかは分かりませんが、マスメディアの質が低い原因は、戦後特有のものと、日本人・日本文明特有のものと、両方があるように思えます。太田さんはいかがお考えでしょうか。
（あと、現在連載中のコラム「田中上奏文」シリーズを読みながら、田中上奏文そのものおよびこれに関する海外の反応について、当時の新聞がどのような報道（反論・反証）をしたのか、あるいはしなかったのかが気になりました。）

おっしゃるとおりだと思います。
もともと、自然科学も社会科学も日本にはなく、江戸時代の末期以降、欧米から輸入されて始まったわけです。
自然科学の方は、欧米の自然科学書の翻訳という初期の段階を経て、やがて数学の活用と実験という科学的手法が日本に根付いたのに対し、社会科学の方は、いまだに欧米の社会科学書の翻訳にとどまっていて、社会・・とりわけ日本社会・・の観察すらまともに行っていない、ということのように思います。
しかし、社会科学も、社会データの統計的処理方法の進展や人間科学の発展等を通じて次第に自然科学化しつつあることから、早晩、日本の社会科学も自然科学と比較しての相対的な遅れをキャッチアップできるのではないでしょうか。
マスメディアは、社会科学の成果を意識的、無意識的に用いて社会を把握し、その把握結果を報じることが仕事であるところ、日本のように社会科学が遅れておれば、日本のマスメディアの報道の質が低くなるのは当然でしょうね。
それでは、その他の記事の紹介です。
さて、これからオリンパスに係る、上場維持をめぐる論議と捜査の本格化が俎上に上ってくる。↓
「オリンパスが決算訂正・・・
訂正した決算に対し、09年３月期までの監査を担当したあずさ監査法人は「十分かつ適切な監査証拠を入手できなかった」との限定をつけて「適正」とした。10年３月期から監査を担当した新日本監査法人は限定なしの「適正」とした。」

オリンパス事件に関し、監査法人の責任を問い、日本の監査法人のありかたについて、根本的問題があることを指摘している。↓
