 Why Are They Using Baseball Bats Instead of Cricket Bats in the U.K. Riots?
 Many people in the U.K. seem to associate baseball bats with violence, perhaps on account of the long association between the two in American films (like The Warriors), television shows (like The Sopranos), and video games (like Grand Theft Auto).
 Aluminum baseball bats are typically around 40 percent lighter than cricket bats, and are therefore easier to wield.

 ・・・Other fearful residents evidently bought baseball bats.・・・
http://www.slate.com/id/2301296/pagenum/all/#p2
While elderly community leaders were among them, a number of others stood at temple doors holding baseball bats.・・・
 We have seen groups of people with baseball bats and cricket bats. That's not the society I want to live in."

When looters rampaged through Hackney last weekend, there were few police officers to stop them and residents had to chase them off with butcher knives, truncheons and baseball bats.

The consumerist and materialist nature of it is new,・・・
 The methods are new, too: using instant-messaging technology to assemble a crowd; diverting police to one place by, say, burning a car; and then, once law enforcement is safely distracted, starting looting in another. The fact that police officers cannot be everywhere at once has proved their Achilles heel, making them all but powerless.

 ・・・Prime Minister David Cameron・・・said in an emergency session of Parliament on Thursday, during which he announced that officials were working with the intelligence services and police to look at how and whether to “stop people communicating via these Web sites and services ・・・including BlackBerry Messenger and Twitter・・・when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality.”

 Libyan rebels・・・captured・・・Brega・・・a key oil terminal Thursday that has repeatedly changed hands in the 6-month-old civil war.・・・
 On Thursday, hundreds of rebel fighters seized control of Nasser City, a small town about 16 miles (25 kilometer) south of the coastal town of Zawiya, after several hours of battle. Nasser City is the closest rebels have come to Tripoli, Gadhafi’s main stronghold. Zawiya is just 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of the Libyan capital.

Though there are no signs of an imminent collapse, flagging support of the business elite in Damascus, divisions among senior officials and even moves by former government stalwarts to distance themselves from the leadership come at a time when Syria also faces what may be its greatest isolation in more than four decades of rule by the Assad family.・・・
 In Damascus this week, 41 former Baathists and government officials・・・announced an initiative for a political transition. Led by・・・a former information minister・・・, the group urged an end to the crackdown, the deployment of the military and the relentless arrest campaign.
 Otherwise, the group warned, the country was headed for “catastrophic results.”

 ・・・secularists tend to be more ethical than religious people. On average, they are more commonly opposed to the death penalty, war and discrimination. And they also have fewer objections to foreigners, homosexuals, oral sex and hashish.
 The most surprising insight revealed by the new wave of secular research so far is that atheists know more about the God they don't believe in than the believers themselves.

 ・・・in all of its history, America has elected only three black senators and two black governors.
 Recalling some of the criticisms of America’s past made by Mr. Obama’s former pastor・・・Reverend Wright・・・, (著者の)Mr. Kennedy writes with feeling about his own father, who put each of his three of his children through Princeton but who “never forgave American society for its racist mistreatment of him and those whom he most loved.”
 His father distrusted the police, who had frequently called him “boy,” and rejected patriotism. Mr. Kennedy’s father “relished Muhammad Ali’s quip that the Vietcong had never called him ‘nigger.’ ” The author places his father, and Mr. Wright, in sympathetic historical light.
 “Many Americans suspect that, in general, African-Americans are less patriotic than whites,” Mr. Kennedy observes. He suggests that African-Americans have never been especially fond of the Fourth of July, for example, partly because the framers of the Declaration of Independence tolerated slavery and partly because the day could be menacing. Whites sometimes “took offense at the sight of blacks celebrating,” he says, “as if they were members of the American political family.”

 ・・・ new business realities usher in the need for a new leadership model, one that replaces command and control with transparency and inclusion. This will increasingly highlight the value of a more feminine approach.・・・
 ・・・stress seemed to increase the capacity for empathy in women while reducing it in males.・・・
 ・・・women (from fifth grade to adulthood) had superior scores in accurately judging messages communicated by facial expressions, body movement and voice quality.
 And not only are women more adept at identifying nonverbal cues, they are better at expressing them—employing more animation, gesture, vocal variety and emotion in their communication behavior.・・・
