<Midshipman>

・・・A total of 25 hostages in Pakistan were freed early Sunday after being held by at least four militants at the army headquarters in Rawalpindi・・・
Four militants and three hostages were killed in the 18-hour standoff・・・
Six army guards were killed initially in the raging gun battle・・・and four gunmen were also killed.
・・・the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the incident.・・・
http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/10/10/pakistan.shootings/index.html

The attack on the headquarters, the Pakistani equivalent of the Pentagon, came after the new leader of the Pakistani Taliban, Hakimullah Mehsud, warned that the army had become the militants’ main target.
The army announced two weeks ago that it planned a major offensive in South Waziristan, the Taliban’s mountainous stronghold. ・・・
The assault and other recent attacks could be the start of the escalation Mr. Mehsud had warned about,・・・.
Each of the attacks appeared to have been chosen for a specific reason.
In one, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the headquarters of the United Nations World Food Program in Islamabad on Monday, killing five United Nations workers. That attack seemed designed to intimidate international aid workers and the agency that the Taliban has said should leave Pakistan.
In Peshawar, the capital of North-West Frontier Province, a car bomb killed 48 people in the busiest bazaar at noon on Friday, when it was most crowded.

This "fedayeen" tactic ? killing until killed ? was also deployed with chilling effect on March 30, when Taliban attackers wearing police uniforms stormed a police academy just outside the eastern city of Lahore, leading to an eight-hour firefight before paramilitary troops and police commandos eventually overwhelmed the attackers. That attack came just weeks after gunmen attacked the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team in the heart of Lahore. In both instances, while the operation was surely orchestrated from South Waziristan, the attackers were traced to southern Punjab, where the presence of Taliban-linked militants is burgeoning.
So far, the government has showed no signs that it is willing to take action against the militants in southern Punjab. Access to ready and heavily indoctrinated recruits from that part of the country is crucial to the militant's demonstrated ability to continue to strike in Pakistan's heartlands, despite losing their much-feared leader・・・
・・・the Pakistan Army is gearing up, after much reluctance, for a ground offensive in South Waziristan to target what remains of Baitullah Mehsud's group, over five thousand well-armed central Asian fighters known for their brutality, and Arab fighters belonging to al-Qaeda. From their eastern patch of South Waziristan, the militants have authored close to 250 suicide attacks across Pakistan in the last two and a half years, and trained other militants who have spread the Pakistani Taliban's brutality across the northwest.

・・・Mullah Muhammad Omar・・・<ha>s staged one of the most remarkable military comebacks in modern history.・・・
Thomas E. Gouttierre, director of the Center for Afghanistan Studies at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, ・・・credits the Taliban’s success not to any military genius on the part of Mullah Omar but to more worldly advisers from Pakistan’s intelligence service and Al Qaeda.
He was born, by various accounts, in 1950 or 1959 or 1960 or 1962. He may be hiding near Quetta, Pakistan, or hunkered down in an Afghan village. No one is sure.・・・
He was born in a village, had limited religious schooling, fought with the mujahedeen against the Soviet Army and helped form the Taliban in 1994. Some accounts say he is married and has two sons.・・・
Mr. bin Laden courted the Taliban leader, vowing allegiance and calling the far less educated man a historic leader of Islam.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/booksblog/2009/oct/09/dictator-lit-leonid-brezhnev-malaya-zemlya
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW7WMxMpa3c
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0S2BxgbHGU&feature=related
