<太田>

<太田>

<TA>

American exceptionalism has increasingly come to have negative connotations.
 The hitch, domestically, is that Americans seem to be losing faith in the American system and American dream, hence the rise of populists like Bernie Sanders on the left and Donald Trump on the right. ・・・

 The media says Trump lost Iowa and Rubio won. That’s insane.・・・
 Trump backers might also fairly note that their squad is not some small, ragtag faction. There were 45,000 votes for the cotton candy--haired cretin--more than George W. Bush notched in Iowa in the 2000 caucuses. And a second-place finish is far from a death knell: Eventual GOP nominee Mitt Romney finished second in Iowa in 2012.・・・

In a sign of the race’s more contentious tone, Clinton felt compelled Wednesday to respond to a day-old jab from Sanders, who told reporters in Keene that she is a progressive “some days,” except when she “announces she is a moderate.”
 Speaking at an event here, Clinton highlighted her work on progressive causes such as gay rights, women’s rights and defense of Social Security, and called Sanders’s comments a “low blow.”・・・

 Why Democrats can’t seem to decide between Clinton and Sanders
 Now here’s why so many Democrats like both of them: Most share Clinton’s view that gradual reform is the most practical way forward. But most also agree with Sanders that even moderately progressive steps will be stymied if money’s influence is left unchecked, if progressives do not find new ways of organizing and mobilizing, and if so many white working-class voters continue to support Republicans.
 The party’s divided mind is one reason Sanders’s challenge is more vigorous than many expected. Call it the dialectical primary: Democrats are searching for a synthesis between reform and revolution.

Right now, I’m not seeing how Sanders does that in South Carolina and other states with large black voting blocs to get the nomination. For many African Americans, it will not be enough to have elected the nation’s first black president. The “millions out there that helped row that boat,” as Ellis wrote, will want to protect his legacy.

 If Russian tanks and troops rolled into the Baltics tomorrow, outgunned and outnumbered NATO forces would be overrun in under three days. That’s the sobering conclusion of war games carried out by a think tank with American military officers and civilian officials.
 “The games’ findings are unambiguous: As currently postured, NATO cannot successfully defend the territory of its most exposed members,” said a report by the Rand Corp., which led the war gaming research.
 A force of about seven brigades in the area, including three heavy armored brigades, and backed up by airpower and artillery, would be enough “to prevent the rapid overrun of the Baltic states,” it said. The additional forces would cost an estimated $2.7 billion a year to maintain.
 The report was released Tuesday, the same day Defense Secretary Ash Carter unveiled plans to add more heavy weapons and armored vehicles to prepositioned stocks in Eastern Europe to give the Pentagon two brigade sets worth of heavy equipment on NATO’s eastern frontier.

 How Politics Has Poisoned Islam・・・
 This is not a new problem in Islam. During the seventh-century leadership of the Prophet Muhammad, whose authority was accepted by all believers, Muslims were a united community. But soon after the prophet’s death, a tension arose that escalated to bloodshed. The issue was not how to interpret the Quran or how to understand the prophet’s lessons. It was about political power: Who -- as the caliph, or successor to the prophet -- had the right to rule?

 ・・・unlike the early Christians, who were divided into sects primarily through theological disputes about the nature of Christ, early Muslims were divided into sects over political disputes about who should rule them.・・・
