http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/japan-is-a-model-not-a-cautionary-tale/?ref=opinion

<太田>

Japan’s slow growth does not look so bad under close examination. Any serious student of economic performance needs to look not at overall growth, but at growth related to the size of the working age population. Japan’s working age population (ages 15 to 64) shrank 5.5 percent from 2001 to 2010, while the number of Americans of that age increased by 9.2 percent -- so we should expect to see slower G.D.P. growth. But even before Abenomics, Japan’s real economic output, per member of the labor force, grew at a faster rate over the first decade of the century than that of the United States, Germany, Britain or Australia.
  ・・・the Gini coefficient before taxes and transfer payments is about the same in the two countries: 0.499 for the United States, and 0.488 for Japan. But the United States does only a little to modulate its inequality, bringing it down to .38. Japan does much more, reducing the Gini coefficient to 0.33.
  Life expectancy at birth (a good measure of the health of the economy) is a world-leading 83.6 years in Japan, versus 78.7 years for Americans.
 It is second-highest in the world for attainment of university education, well ahead of the United States. And even in periods of slow growth, Japan has run its economy in a way that has kept a lid on the unemployment rate. During the global financial crisis, the rate peaked at 5.5 percent; in the two decades of its malaise, it never surpassed 5.8 percent.

<太田>

http://sankei.jp.msn.com/politics/news/130611/plc13061103200003-n1.htm

http://www.chosunonline.com/site/data/html_dir/2013/06/11/2013061100456.html

http://www.tokyo-np.co.jp/s/article/2013061001002180.html

http://digital.asahi.com/articles/TKY201306100560.html?ref=comkiji_txt_end_s_kjid_TKY201306100560

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/election/sangiin/2013/news1/20130611-OYT1T00231.htm?from=top

http://www.asahi.com/politics/update/0610/TKY201306100498.html

http://digital.asahi.com/articles/TKY201306100643.html?ref=comkiji_txt_end_s_kjid_TKY201306100643

http://sankei.jp.msn.com/world/news/130610/chn13061021010004-n1.htm

 Merkel, other European leaders raise concerns on U.S. surveillance・・・
 When Merkel meets Obama, “you can safely assume that this is an issue that the chancellor will bring up,” Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told reporters on Monday. Merkel herself grew up in the East German system, where the government collected vast amounts of information about its own citizens.
 Other German officials said they were unhappy that their citizens appeared to have fewer rights than Americans.
 German users of American-run services such as Facebook and Gmail needed to understand that U.S. authorities had “broad access” to their data.
 The suspicion in large parts of the business sector is that Americans would also be interested in our patent applications.”

South of Utah's Great Salt Lake, the National Security Agency (NSA), a United States foreign intelligence service, keeps watch over one of its most expensive secrets. Here, on 100,000 square meters (1,100,000 square feet) near the US military's Camp Williams, the NSA is constructing enormous buildings to house superfast computers. All together, the project will cost around $2 billion (EURO1.5 billion) and the computers will be capable of storing a gigantic volume of data, at least 5 billion gigabytes. The energy needed to power the cooling system for the servers alone will cost $40 million a year.
 ・・・the servers are large enough to store the entirety of humanity's electronic communications for the next 100 years・・・
 ・・・the intelligence agency began seeking out direct access to servers belonging to American Internet companies on a wide scale in 2007. The first of these companies to come onboard was Microsoft. Yahoo followed half a year later, then Google, Facebook, PalTalk, YouTube, Skype and AOL. The most recent company to declare its willingness to cooperate was Apple・・・
  ・・・this access to data is achieved "directly from the servers" of the companies.
 ・・・even data streams traveling from Europe to Asia, the Pacific region or South America often pass through servers in the US. "A target's phone call, email or chat will take the cheapest path, not the physically most direct path,・・・
 Utah is home to the largest number of Mormons in the world.・・・
 ・・・and many are then recruited by the Utah Army National Guard, whose 300th Military Intelligence Brigade employs 1,600 linguists. The NSA has access to these linguists at all times, and one insider believes they are used in "analyzing international telecommunications."
 The agency also conducts reconnaissance around the globe, for example with satellites. It has also installed high-performance antennae in various countries to pick up mobile phone communications.

  The Iraqi Army’s 16th Brigade was once a hopeful symbol of cooperation between Iraq’s rival ethnic groups. Composed of roughly half Arabs and half Kurds, the brigade has provided security since 2008 for an ethnically mixed population in one of the most volatile parts of the country.
 Now the brigade has split in two. Amidst rising ethnic and sectarian pressure, the Kurdish half of the brigade has stopped taking orders from Baghdad, and Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government intends to formally incorporate more than 1,200 soldiers -- and the sensitive territory they control -- under the authority of its own security forces.

 ・・・the similarity of gestures among bonobo, chimpanzee, and human child at comparable periods of development・・・
 For all three species, these gestures were most often considered “communicative” because they were paired with eye contact, a vocalization or persistence.・・・
 It really speaks to the idea that gestures and vocal language, or speech, evolved together.
