http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1WW18QId50

<MS>

http://www.asahi.com/special/10005/TKY201103140199.html

Fukushima Nuclear Accident Update (17 March 2011, 01:15 UTC)
Injuries
2 TEPCO employees have minor injuries;
2 subcontractor employees are injured, one person suffered broken legs and one person whose condition is unknown was transported to the hospital;
2 people are missing;
2 people were "suddenly taken ill";
2 TEPCO employees were transported to hospital during the time of donning respiratory protection in the control centre;
4 people (2 TEPCO employees, 2 subcontractor employees) sustained minor injuries due to the explosion at Unit 1 on 11 March and were transported to the hospital; and
11 people (4 TEPCO employees, 3 subcontractor employees and 4 Japanese civil defense workers) were injured due to the explosion at Unit 3 on 14 March.

http://www.asahi.com/special/10005/TKY201103140199.html

Japan’s top roboticists. Instead of building robots that go where humans never could, this country renowned for its robotics expertise invested in machines that do things that humans can already do — like talk, dance, play the violin and preside over weddings.・・・
 After a 1999 accident at a nuclear fuel processing facility in Tokai in which two workers died from radiation exposure, the Japanese government and the company operating the facility began developing radiation-resistant robots. But after a year, the trade ministry halted the project, said・・・Hirose Shigeo, a robotics researcher at the Tokyo Institute of Technology・・・<and> Satoshi Tadokoro・・・at Tohoku University in Sendai・・・
 Another Japanese agency, the Nuclear Safety Technology Center, constructed two robots equipped with cameras and hazardous-materials monitors. One, called Monirobo, was dispatched to Fukushima last week, according to Japanese news reports. But representatives of Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the Daiichi facility, aren’t saying how, or even whether, the robot is being used on-site.・・・
 Shigeo said a robot developed in his lab, called Helios IX, could fill the reconnaissance niche. The machine can climb stairs, open doors, and monitor temperature and radiation. If its cameras aimed at the spent fuel pools, they could show whether water cannons operated by ground crews were refilling the pools or simply splashing streams onto the floor.
 After the crisis began more than two weeks ago, Shigeo upgraded the radio communications on Helios IX so it can be guided from longer distances and through the heavy concrete of the Daiichi plant. So far, though, no one has requested his help — or that of his robot.
 Another reconnaissance robot, built by Tadokoro and named Quince, may be called into action. The Tokyo Fire Department, which has sent vehicles and workers to Daiichi, is evaluating how the low-slung, tank-tracked machine could assist, Tadokoro said.
 American robots are being enlisted as well. ・・・
 Despite these investments, France (which derives about 80 percent of its electricity from nuclear power), and Germany (25 percent) are the only countries with at-the-ready robots designed for nuclear disasters. The nuclear power industry in each country has funded the operations for decades.
In the United States, the government and the nuclear industry have instead been reactive, building a handful of robots for specific nuclear tasks — but only after accidents.・・・

 Later the same year, the Americans packed up their own airbase too・・・
 Italy has the darkest record.
It invaded Tripoli in 1911, hoping the Libyans would see this as a liberation from Ottoman rule. Instead it provoked 20 years of rebellion.
 Then as now, it was the region around Benghazi that was the main rebel domain, under the leadership of Omar al-Mukhtar.
 Italy's fascist dictator Benito Mussolini eventually crushed the uprising with mass punishment tactics.
 Over 100,000 Libyans were deported from rebel strongholds to concentration camps. Thousands died.
 In 1931, the Italians captured Omar Mukhtar himself and hanged him in front of his followers - turning him into a martyr and hero.
 British, French and American・・・drove out the Italians in World War II and occupied it themselves - with the British controlling most of the country, including Tripoli and Benghazi.
 As with their other Middle East dominions, the British and French occupation authorities did their best to resist pressure for Libyan independence.・・・
  London came up with a plan in 1949 to divide its three main regions between itself, France and, incredibly, Italy, the former colonial power.
 The new superpower, the United States, intervened at the United Nations to stop the British plan - but not because it cared about Libyan aspirations.
 Washington now saw Libya - with its long coastline, in the middle of the Mediterranean - as a strategic prize in its struggle with the Soviet Union and was expanding its huge Wheelus airbase just outside Tripoli.
 Originally built by the Italians, almost 5,000 Americans and scores of aircraft were based there by the 1960s.
 Libya became independent in 1951, under King Idris, but still remained a British protectorate - with both the UK and the US maintaining their military bases and control over the country's foreign and defence policies.
 Commercial oil discoveries in the late 1950s gave both governments even more incentive to keep things as they were - until a young signals captain called Muammar Gaddafi seized power in 1969.
 It's said the British wanted to send in SAS-trained mercenaries to arrange a counter-coup to restore the king, until the Americans intervened - apparently deciding Col Gaddafi would be a reliable anti-communist.

Egyptians “invented the concept of the nation-state that still dominates our planet,”・・・the country’s earliest kings not only “formulated and harnessed” traditional tools of leadership — like using ideology and ceremony to unite a disparate population and bind it to the state — but also used more malign instruments like police surveillance, xenophobia and the brutal repression of dissent to cement their power. ・・・
  Egyptians increasingly came to hope for “something better in the next world,” to believe in the idea of “transfiguration and transformation” — an idea that “would echo through later civilizations and ultimately shape the Judeo-Christian tradition.” ・・・
