<太田>

<太田>

<太田>

 ・・・Nicholas Clegg・・・has argued that Britain's "special relationship" with the United States is outmoded, that Britain can no longer afford to be the world's No. 2 policeman. He has called for the nation to consider reducing its nuclear deterrent and warned against "saber-rattling" on Iran. ・・・
 Born to a Dutch mother and a father descended from Russian nobility, Clegg is not your average Englishman. The multilingual career politician was educated at Cambridge and the University of Minnesota. He and his Spanish wife have three sons -- Antonio, Alberto and Miguel. In an Anglican country, they raise their children as Roman Catholics -- though Clegg publicly professed to be an atheist in 2007.

Lukashenko was frightened that Washington and the Kremlin reached agreement on the situation in Kyrgyzstan and could repeat the scenario in Belarus・・・Lukashenko is inciting Bakiyev to battle to show the West and Russia the danger of changing a dictatorial government.

 ・・・the prime example of the dangers of power, the equivalent of the lottery winners destroyed by riches, is the United States during the George W. Bush administration. ・・・ "the power problem" is that the United States has too much of it.・・・
 ・・・the resource curse. This is the perverse tendency for a large endowment of a valuable resource -- usually oil -- to make a country poorer by stunting the development of the institutions necessary for a productive economy and by boosting the value of the country's currency, thereby harming its exports. ・・・a large endowment of power has a comparable effect, leading its possessor to adopt policies that weaken it.
  ・・・ancient Athens would not have tried to conquer Sicily and the United States would not have intervened in Vietnam had the two great powers not had substantial military and economic resources.
 ・・・power leads to failure in four distinct ways: by discouraging states from adapting to complexity, by making them vulnerable to overstretch, by leading them to fall victim to moral hazard, and by inducing them to act unilaterally. ・・・
 ・・・vision of a more modest U.S. foreign policy, ・・・is destined to be adopted. The United States will do less, perhaps much less, beyond its borders in the next two decades than it has in the last two. ・・・
 The principal cause will be the fiscal condition of the United States.
 The nation's growing fiscal burden is also likely to put pressure on its most important international missions -- its military presence, which helps keep the peace, in East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, places where instability could seriously harm U.S. interests.
  Whereas their common theme is the dangers that arise when the United States has too much power, their successors two decades from now will be chronicling the even worse -- perhaps far worse -- consequences of the United States' having too little of it.

There is a general agreement about risk, then, in the established regulatory practices of several developed countries: risks are deemed unacceptable if the annual fatality risk is higher than 1 in 10,000 or perhaps higher than 1 in 100,000 and acceptable if the figure is lower than 1 in 1 million or 1 in 2 million. Between these two ranges is an area in which risk might be considered "tolerable." ・・・
  ・・・vastly more lives could have been saved if counterterrorism funds had instead been spent on combating hazards that present unacceptable risks.・・・
http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/66186/john-mueller-and-mark-g-stewart/hardly-existential?page=show

 ・・・obese tended to have smaller, more atrophied brains than thinner people・・・
 Brains usually atrophy with age, but being obese appears to accelerate the process. This is bad news: pronounced brain atrophy is a feature of dementia(痴呆).・・・
 FTO, as the gene is known, appears to play a role in both body weight and brain function. ・・・
 Obesity exacerbates problems like sleep apnea(睡眠時無呼吸), which can result in the brain being starved of oxygen; this can lead to brain damage. Obesity often goes along with high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, all of which are bad for the brain in their own right. ・・・
 Fat tissue itself may be a problem. Fat cells secrete(分泌する) hormones like leptin; leptin acts on the brain in a variety of ways, and is thought to play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s. Obesity may thus disrupt the normal production of leptin, with dangerous results. Fat cells also secrete substances that cause inflammation(炎症); chronic inflammation of the brain, which is often found in the obese, impairs learning and memory and is also a feature of Alzheimer’s. ・・・
