http://www.ohtan.net/blogtoc/

Although Obama's top advisers disagree over whether to adopt a counterterrorism strategy or a counterinsurgency approach in Afghanistan, they have generally reached a consensus on other matters・・・. That consensus emphasizes the importance of training Afghan security and police forces, as well as improving efforts to build effective government institutions.
The administration is also trying to bolster the government in neighboring Pakistan.

The National Security Archive at George Washington University released documents on Tuesday showing that US officials believed they had an understanding with Japan when the allies signed a new security treaty in 1960.
A confidential US State Department memo prepared in 1960 for then secretary of state Christian Herter to brief Congress said Washington had to consult Japan on “introduction of nuclear weapons.”
However, it said that the US, which has stationed troops in Japan since its defeat in World War II, could use Japanese soil “as needed” in an emergency if communist neighbor North Korea launched an attack.

Article I, Section 9, of the Constitution, the emolument clause, clearly stipulates: "And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State."
The award of the peace prize to a sitting president is not unprecedented. But Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson received the honor for their past actions・・・
Obama's award is different. It is intended to affect future action. As a member of the Nobel Committee explained, the prize should encourage Obama to meet his goal of nuclear disarmament.・・・
The five-member Nobel commission is elected by the Storting, the parliament of Norway. Thus the award of the peace prize is made by a body representing the legislature of a sovereign foreign state. There is no doubt that the Nobel Peace Prize is an "emolument" ("gain from employment or position," according to Webster).

・・・Militants dressed in police uniforms simultaneously attacked three law enforcement agencies in Lahore on Thursday morning, the fifth major attack in Pakistan in the last 10 days. ・・・
More than 30 people were killed, including 19 police officers and at least 11 militants

・・・British abhorrence of America・・・may be unfathomable to those raised to think of Britain as "the mother country" for whom we fought two world wars and with whom we won the cold war. ・・・
It's common to hear Brits routinely dismiss Americans as racists (even with an African-American president), religious nuts, global polluters, warmongers, cultural philistines, and as intellectual Untermenschen. ・・・
One of the best answers came from an Englishwoman with whom I shared a table for coffee. She said, "It's because we used to be big and important and we aren't any more. Now it's America that's big and important and we can never forgive you for that."

・・・“The American Civil War is one of the most mysterious great wars of history,・・・mysterious because unexpected, mysterious also because of the intensity with which it took fire.・・・
・・・how the overmatched Confederate Army managed to fight so well for so long<?>・・・
The sheer size of the American <Civil War's> battlefield・・・larger than Napoleon’s Europe, larger almost than Genghis Khan’s Eurasia.・・・
Because the South had few if any large cities to attack, ・・・its army・・・presented itself as the only target at which to strike.・・・
<The truth was that> the Southern mind was the only profitable target in the Confederacy.

A study says women have become steadily more miserable since 1972, causing some to point a finger at feminism. ・・・
 <No!>
・・・suicide is a cold, hard fact, and the suicide rate has been the gold standard of misery since sociologist Emile Durkheim wrote the book on it in 1897. As Stevenson and Wolfers report -- somewhat sheepishly, we must imagine -- "contrary to the subjective well-being trends we document, female suicide rates have been falling, even as male suicide rates have remained roughly constant through most of our sample [1972-2006]・・・
