<サヨク>

http://www.jiji.com/jc/c?g=pol_30&k=2009083100716

<太田>

http://sankei.jp.msn.com/politics/policy/090901/plc0909011934018-n1.htm

<太田>

The LDP stood for close U.S.-Japan relations, while Yukio Hatoyama, the inexperienced politician who leads the DPJ and will probably be Japan's next prime minister, has called for a more Asia-centered foreign policy, sometimes dressing this up with assaults on American "market fundamentalism" and other ills of globalization. There will no doubt be room for negotiation with the Obama administration, perhaps over such issues as the basing of U.S. Marines in Okinawa. But the threat of a nuclear North Korea makes Japan's neighborhood too dangerous, we think, for the government in Tokyo to seek a rupture with Washington or for the Obama administration to let one develop.

We hope this stunning rout presages the end of economic decline and political stagnation, ・・・
 Some wonder if the Liberal Democratic Party can survive this loss. We hope it -- or some successor -- does.

Hatoyama has said that Japan must strengthen its economic and security ties with East Asia. Americans should not be alarmed. China is Japan's largest trading partner, and the countries share a neighborhood. Such integration can help Japan's economic recovery without harming its ties to the U.S. A healthy Japanese economy is in everyone's interest.

 U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon・・・has had more face time with autocratic leaders than any of his recent predecessors, jetting off for tete-a-tetes with Burma's senior general, Than Shwe, and pulling aside Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir at summits for discreet chats. ・・・
 "It is human relationships which can make a difference," Ban said in a recent interview, adding that he doesn't find it productive to scold foreign leaders in public but won't shrink from delivering tough messages in private. "Some might think I have been quite soft, but I have been quite straight, very strong in a sense."
 The approach, however, has recently exposed the U.N. chief to criticism that he too often remains silent in the face of atrocities by the very leaders he seeks to cultivate, and that he has exaggerated his accomplishments. ・・・
 Halfway through his first term, Ban is facing a leadership crisis as U.N. civil servants and diplomats here increasingly portray him as an ineffective administrator whose reluctance to hold outlaw leaders to account for bad behavior has undercut the United Nations' moral authority. ・・・
 Despite the criticism, Ban still enjoys the support of the United Nations' most powerful countries, including the United States, China and Britain, and of the U.S. Congress, which has recently voted to pay off American debt to the United Nations.

A documentary on Russian state television last week claimed that, in the 1930s, Poland conspired with Germany and Japan to invade the Soviet Union. ・・・
 On Tuesday, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service unveiled archival documents said to show Polish cooperation with Nazi Germany before the war and Polish attempts to sow discord among the Soviet Union’s ethnic nationalities. ・・・
 In Poland, however, Mr. Putin seemed to step back from historical debates, describing a shared failure to prevent “the bloodiest, most horrible war in the history of humanity.”
 “All attempts between 1934 and 1939 to make peace with the Nazis, signing various agreements and pacts, were from a moral point of view unacceptable and from a practical point of view pointless, harmful and dangerous,” he said at the Gdansk memorial service. “It is necessary to admit these mistakes, and our country has done this.”

 Russia published 400 pages of documents gathered by undercover Soviet agents between 1935 and 1945, including telegrams, letters and reports intercepted from Polish missions abroad. Their release coincided with the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of war.・・・
 Lev Sotskov, a retired KGB major general who compiled the documents, said there was evidence Poland signed a secret protocol with Germany in 1934. Citing a report written by an unidentified Soviet agent, he said Poland had agreed to remain neutral if Germany attacked the Soviet Union.
 His claims provoked uproar at a press conference in Moscow, with Polish journalists jumping to their feet and denouncing the document as a fake. There were also heated exchanges over the role played by Jozef Beck, Poland's foreign minister in 1939, amid unsubstantiated claims he was a German agent.・・・
 "This is absolute rubbish," said Mariusz Wolos, of Poland's Academy of Sciences. "Nothing similar has ever turned up in archives in Germany. ・・・
 The documents show that a group of Polish spies based in Paris took part in a secret operation called Prometheism to incite an uprising in Ukraine, Georgia and other Soviet territories. "We know all about that. It's already written about," Wolos said.

Jesuits, who began establishing their missions across parts of what is now modern-day Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia in the 17th Century. ・・・
 As well as religion, the Jesuits also taught European music and how to make instruments, such as the cello, harp and violin.
 After the Spanish expelled the Jesuits in 1767, the indigenous population preserved the music and re-wrote the scores with lyrics in their own language.
 Yet it was not until a few years ago that much of this music came to wider notice・・・
