<太田>

http://latache1992.blog56.fc2.com/

<太田>

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/politics/news/20090619-OYT1T01023.htm
http://mainichi.jp/select/seiji/news/20090623ddm005010015000c.html

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Japan/KF20Dh01.html

A most important barometer of the political trend will be next month's elections to the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), at which 127 members will be elected. At the last TMA election in 2005, the LDP had a landslide victory on the back of Koizumi's popularity, and the DPJ's performance was dismal.

 If the DPJ fails for whatever reasons, political chaos will follow. It is hard to think that the people of this highly developed society, which still has the world's second-largest economy, would let themselves fall into such a chaotic political situation.

<太田>

For 200 years, the western world (and later Japan) -- together constituting a small minority of the global population -- has dominated the world and to all intents and purposes run it.・・・
 ・・・let us take the one that might appear most westernised, namely Japan. In fact, it remains profoundly different: social relations are shame-based rather than guilt-based and very hierarchical; the legal system plays a much smaller role than in western societies; and the labour force is far more gendered. Not least, its political system differs greatly. It is often classified as western. Certainly there is universal suffrage and a multi-party system but, as you know, the Liberal Democrats have been in power more or less permanently since the mid-50s and, as Karel van Wolferen argues, power really lies in the bureaucracy. So while Japan has the trappings of a western-style democracy in practice power resides in a Japanese-style Confucian state. It is not like China nor is it like the west. Japan enjoys a very different kind of modernity of its own.

In Japan opposition candidate Toshihito Kumagai has just been voted overwhelmingly mayor of Chiba once a LDP citadel, portending the end of the LDP's fraying hegemony. Japan's seventeen year stagnation is forcing change in its economic model and society; at the same time it is readier to question, less deferential and more willing to use the courts than in van Wolferen's time. Its democratic institutions -- as imperfect as Britain's -- are moving it on.

Women were particular targets after President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad began to strictly enforce previously-loosened restrictions. Thousands of women were arrested or intimidated because they did not adhere precisely to Islamic dress code on the streets.
Mr. Moussavi also campaigned along with his wife, Zahra Rahanavard, and other prominent Iranian women rallied to his side as he promised to improve women’s status. ・・・

The second of three children, she studied Islamic philosophy at a branch of Tehran's Azad University, until deciding to pursue a career in the tourism industry. She took private classes to become a tour guide, including Turkish language courses, friends said, hoping to some day lead groups of Iranians on trips abroad.・・・
 She loved music, especially Persian pop, and was taking piano classes, according to Panahi, who is in his 50s, and other friends. She was also an accomplished singer(注), they said.

 (注)・・・women are banned from singing publicly in Iran. Her name means “voice” in Persian, and many are now calling her the voice of Iran.(NYタイムス上掲)

 Neda, <Panahi> said, was smart and loving. She had a mischievous streak, gentling teasing her friends and causing them to laugh. She was passionate about life and meant no one any harm, they said. In the election unrest, friends found in her an unexpected daring, a willingness to take risks for her beliefs.
 But she was never an activist, they added, and she began attending the mass protests only because of a personal sense of outrage over the election results.・・・
 At least 13 people were killed in Saturday's rioting
